His friend and mentor, Hugh Connelly, afraid that Mark is in danger of losing his “artistic soul,” advises him to go back to Italy and reacquaint himself with the “old masters.” In Venice, Mark falls in love with Alexandra, a beautiful art restorer, but it’s a one-sided affair. One night, hoping to win her over, he climbs up on a roof to find out who painted her favorite fresco. He falls off the roof and wakes up in 15th century Venice where he meets an innkeeper named Francesca, who looks exactly like Alexandra. And it gets curiouser and curiouser from there. During his stay—which is sometimes zany and sometimes frightening—he meet his hero, Michelangelo, who teaches him the true meaning of art.

I have read several of Michael Grant's books and enjoyed this one just as much as the others. This one was a bit different from the others which were set in World War II era life, Ireland, and one about a small town cop. Since I have been to Venice this was on my list to read. It is filled with history and a plot that twists through today's time and times long ago. I would recommend his other books to readers too. Some of his novels I could see movies in the future.Product details

Having read a variety of novels set in the amazing city of Venice, I rank this as one of the most clever and fun. The book's written in the first person in a conversational style that made me feel I was trotting along with the main character as he traversed and bumbled his way through the streets of 15th century Venice. Not only does it have a great plot and a unique main character, it's well-written and well-edited. I just ordered it for my friend who's an artist and has been to Venice and for my daughter who's been a couple times too.
